MARTA PANIAGUA MARTÍN

Marta Paniagua Martín is an ITPS member since July 2026. She is Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical, Energy and Mechanical Technology at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (URJC). She obtained her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Chemical Engineering from URJC and completed her PhD in 2011, receiving the Extraordinary Doctorate Award for her research on the catalytic conversion of glycerol into oxygenated compounds for advanced fuel formulations. Previously, she was awarded a highly competitive FPU fellowship from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, which supported her doctoral training from 2008 to 2012.

Throughout her academic career, she has specialized in the development of sustainable catalytic processes for the production of biofuels and bio-based chemicals. Her research has focused on the valorisation of glycerol and lignocellulosic biomass, the design of innovative heterogeneous catalysts, and the synthesis of high-energy-density oxygenated compounds with applications in the energy and transport sectors. Her work contributes to the transition towards more sustainable chemical processes and the efficient use of renewable resources.

Her international experience includes research stays at the University of California, Riverside (USA), under the supervision of Prof. Charles E. Wyman, and at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), under the supervision of Prof. Anders Riisager. These collaborations strengthened and expanded the biomass valorisation research activities developed at URJC.

She has authored more than 40 scientific publications in international peer-reviewed journals, the majority in top-quartile journals, as well as 4 book chapters and over 60 conference contributions, most of them presented at international events. According to Scopus (July 2026), her research has received more than 2,500 citations and an h-index of 27.

She has participated in 15 research projects funded through competitive public research programmes and 10 projects with industrial partners, including Repsol, Abengoa, Iberdrola and Acciona. She has served as Principal Investigator of competitive projects on biomass conversion and sustainable fuel production and was recognized in 2018 by the URJC-UAH International Campus of Excellence for her leadership in innovative biomass valorisation research. Alongside her research activity, she has extensive teaching experience in Chemical Engineering and actively contributes to scientific dissemination, training initiatives and R&D management activities.
