María José López Muñoz

María José López Muñoz is an ITPS member since its creation. She is Full Professor of Chemical Engineering in the Chemical and Environmental Technology Department of Rey Juan Carlos University, since 2019, with teaching activity in: Chemical Engineering, Technical Industrial Engineering, Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Sciences, and Bachelor's Degrees in Food Science and Technology, Environmental Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Industrial Organization Engineering, Master's Degree in Environmental Science and Technology, Master's Degree in Energy Technology and Resources, and Master's Degree in Industrial Engineering at the URJC, PhD Program in Industrial Technologies: Chemistry, Environment, Energy, Electronics, Mechanics, and Materials. 

As postdoctoral researcher she has been abroad for more than 26 months in United Kingdom (Chemistry Department of Bradford University); Italy (Dipartimento di Ingegneria Chimica, Università di Palermo); France (Institut de recherches sur la catalyse. Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Lyon) and Japan (Kyushu Institute of Technology). Current research activity: 

  • Photocatalytic processes: synthesis and characterization of photocatalysts, application of photocatalysis and persulfate systems to the treatment of water polluted with arsenic, mercury, chromium, cyanides, emerging pollutants, and other organic pollutants.
  • Adsorption processes for heavy metals and arsenic using functionalized materials, and iron and iron oxide nanoparticles and by valorization of exhausted biomass for water treatment. 

Co-author of more than 80 research papers + one patent + 7 book chapters, and more than 110 presentations at international and national conferences. h-index of 37. Participation in more than 20 competitive research projects in international, national, and regional calls, of which she was principal investigator in 10, one of them European. She has supervised eight doctoral theses, with two currently in progress. She has officially recognized five six-year research periods (sexenios), four five-year teaching periods, and six Docentia program periods, one of them with an "excellent" rating. 

University management and research positions: Academic Secretary of the International Doctoral School (EID) of the URJC (2018-2021), Head of the Quality Assurance System of the EID and Member of its Management Committee (2018-2021). Coordinator of the Doctoral Program in Industrial Technologies (EID) (2015-2019), Academic Secretary of the Department (Dept. of Chemical and Environmental Technology, 2011-2014), Vocal Member of the Research Commission of the URJC (/2007-2011), Coordinator of the Chemical Engineering Degree (2008-09).
