Luis Fernando Bautista

Dr Fernando Bautista holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry with a specialisation in industrial chemistry and a doctorate in chemistry from the chemical engineering program at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM). Dr. Bautista's professional trajectory began in industrial companies, working in the R&D Department at Probisa, in the Process Department at Técnicas Reunidas and as an independent consultant. His research and teaching career has occurred in the Chemical Engineering Department at UCM (1996-2004) and, since 2004, in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Technology at Rey Juan Carlos University. He undertook a postdoctoral stay (1998-1999) in Prof. Jens Nielsen's Group at the Center for Process Biotechnology, DTU (Denmark). From 2002 to 2004, He was Deputy Technical Director of a biodiesel plant where he participated in the patented process development. In 2023, he stayed as a visiting Professor at UFSC, Brazil.

Since 2010, one of his main research areas has been developing microalgae-based biorefinery processes to achieve a comprehensive use and transformation of microalgae biomass. The work is aimed at biofuel production (biodiesel, bio-kerosene, bio-oil, and biogas) and the extraction and purification of high-value-added bioproducts (pigments, proteins, and lipids). He also conducts research in soil bioremediation and biodegradation of organic contaminants using microorganisms and immobilised enzymes.

Dr Bautista has extensive teaching experience in numerous undergraduate and bachelor's subjects and master's and doctoral degrees in chemical, environmental, and energy engineering, chemistry, biotechnology and environmental sciences.

Among the academic positions he has held, the most notable are Coordinator for the Environmental Engineering Degree (2010-2014), Overseer of research lines within the Doctoral Program in Industrial Technologies (2014-2020) or Coordinator for the Engineering and Architecture in the Official Master's School (2020-2024). From February 2024, he is Deputy Director of Internationalisation, Employability and Relationships with Companies of the Higher School of Experimental Sciences and Technology.
