Juan Ángel Botas Echevarría
Juan Ángel Botas is an ITPS member since its cretion. He is Full Professor of Chemical Engineering at Rey Juan Carlos University. He received his PhD from the University of the Basque Country (1999). Member of the research group awarded with the "BURDINOLA'2000 Research Award in the field of Chemical Engineering: Catalytic Chemical Reactors". He has been Visiting Associated in the Chemical Engineering Department of the University of Bath (United Kingdom, 2002).
He was appointed to the Rey Juan Carlos University in 2000, where he has been in charge of different management and academic positions: Coordinator of the Chemical Engineering degree (2003-2008); Head of the Chemical and Energy Technology Department (2009-2012); Coordinator of the Section of Engineering and Architecture at the School of Official Masters (2015-2020) and Head of the Chemical, Energy and Mechanical Technology Department (2018-2022). He was also General Manager of the IMDEA Energy Institute (2007-2009) and Deputy General Director for Research at the Regional Government of Madrid (2012-2015).
His research work focuses on the catalytic conversion of biomass (lignocellulosic wastes and vegetable oils) into high value-added chemicals and biofuels, the production of CO2-free H2 by catalytic decomposition of light hydrocarbons and water splitting through thermochemical cycles, as well as H2 storage in MOF materials (Metal-Organic Frameworks), the chemical recycling of polyolefinic plastic wastes, the removal of pollutants in wastewater through oxidation processes, the recovery of volatile organic compounds from the air through adsorption processes and the catalytic control of exhaust emissions.
He has been involved in more than 35 research projects funded by public institutions and in 25 research contracts funded by private companies, with activities of technology transfer, and he is coordinator of the high performance research group in Chemical and Environmental Engineering of the Rey Juan Carlos University. He has been author of more than 85 scientific publications in high impact international journals in the field of Chemical, Environmental and Materials Engineering. Likewise, he has also been author of close to 200 communications to scientific congresses and meetings, 3 patents and 5 book chapters. He has been supervisor of 10 PhD thesis.
